(The operating system is a mess, blah blah blah.) About 5 years ago I switched to Logic Audio which is kinda like Pro Tools for hip hop heads. Since I knew what sound I was going for (MPCish) it wasn't hard to figure out how to attain it using the computer. Now I work a lot faster and more efficiently and I can lay vocals directly into the same system that I made the beat in. Logic on a Mac is where it's at. It's the core of my musical world. Oh, and that piece of equipment in my hands in the photo is a Roland TR808 that I bought from DJ Pauly Paul (from Portland) when I was about 17 years old!
